National Science and Technology Fair March 21

The Scientific Research Council (SRC) is hoping to unearth some innovative talents at the National Science and Technology fair, on Monday, March 21.

The fair, to be held at the Girl Guides Headquarters, at 2 Waterloo Road, in Kingston, will see students from primary, secondary and tertiary educational institutions competing for prizes in six main categories.

Categories include Education and Entertainment; Food, Water and Agriculture; Information and Communications Technology (ICT), Electronics and Robotics; Environmental Stewardship; Green Energy; Transportation; Security and Sports.

The event will provide a forum through which students can create, innovate and showcase their ideas and knowledge in a competitive setting.

Theme for the fair is: ‘Youth Centred Science, Technology and Innovation for Sustainable Development’, and the guest speaker will be Innovator and Confectionery entrepreneur, Patria-Kaye Aarons.

In addition to viewing the exhibits of competitors, attendees will be able to win prizes as well as share in the day’s activities by participating in the ‘Try a Skill’ village, career counselling as well as demonstrations.

“The SRC will have booth displays with various demonstrations, such as tissue culture and wastewater treatment and will show you how science and technology is put to work every day,” Technical Officer, Felicia Bailey, told JIS News.

The fair will last from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. and is free to the public. It has been organised to encourage children to embrace science and technology and to view it as the way forward as a critical component to the future development of the country.

Other partners in the staging of the event are the Jamaica Observer, Digicel, Development Bank of Jamaica, HEART Trust/NTA, College of Agriculture, Science and Education, the Association of Science Teachers of Jamaica, Mystic Mountain, Carlong Publishers, World Skill Jamaica, Jamaica Biscuit Company and Jamaica Small Business Loans.
